Import external video files and control how different aspect ratios are displayed.
Importing Video Clips
You can import external video files (MP4, MOV, etc.) to combine with your screen recording. This is useful for adding intro/outro clips, B-roll footage, or clips from other recordings.
How to Import
- Right-click on the video track in the timeline
- Select “Import Video Clip”
- Choose a video file from your computer
- The clip will be inserted at the playhead position
Scaling Modes
When an imported clip has a different aspect ratio than your recording (e.g., importing a 4:3 clip into a 16:9 project), you can choose how it should be displayed.
Fit (Default)
The video layer resizes to match the imported clip's aspect ratio. This shows the entire clip without cropping, with letterboxing/pillarboxing if needed.
Best for: Showing full content without distortion
Cover
The video layer stays at the original recording's aspect ratio. The imported clip is scaled up to fill the entire area, cropping edges as needed.
Best for: Seamless transitions, when edge content isn't critical
Stretch
The video layer stays at the original recording's aspect ratio. The imported clip is stretched to fill the area, which may distort the content.
Use sparingly: May cause visible distortion
Changing the Scaling Mode
Select the Imported Clip
Click on the imported video clip in the timeline to select it.
Open Properties Panel
The properties panel on the right will show clip-specific settings.
Choose Scaling Mode
Under the “Scaling” section, select Fit, Cover, or Stretch. The preview updates immediately.
Cursor Effects on Imported Clips
Imported clips don't have cursor tracking data, so cursor effects (highlight, click effects) are automatically disabled for these clips.
Automatic Detection
Cameo automatically detects whether a clip has cursor data. Screen recordings will show cursor effects; imported clips will not.
Common Use Cases
Intro/Outro Clips
Add branded intro animations or outro sequences. Use “Cover” mode if your intro has a different aspect ratio.
B-Roll Footage
Insert supporting footage between screen recording segments. Use “Fit” to show all content.
Multi-Device Recording
Combine recordings from different screen sizes. Use “Fit” to maintain original proportions.
